Every recommendation has to earn its place.
We believe a buying guide should help even when you never buy through our links. This is the standard we're adopting for every future FoxyPick product review. It is a publishing policy, not a claim that we have already completed tests.
Know exactly what we're comparing
Specify the precise model, version, included accessories, intended buyer, use case, and a clear comparison date. Avoid treating different generations as interchangeable.
Separate tests from claims
Identify firsthand tests separately from manufacturer specifications, external tests, and owner reports. Cite key sources and state what we couldn't verify.
Measure more than sticker price
Consider recurring fees, required accessories, installation, consumables, serviceability, and ownership duration. Verify prices and label when they were checked.
Explain who should skip it
Document drawbacks, software or subscription requirements, warranty terms, privacy risks, compatibility limits, and viable alternatives.
Make the criteria visible
Use category-specific criteria rather than a universal score. State which matters most and why. Different buyers may reach different conclusions.
Keep advertising separate
Affiliate compensation does not decide winners. Disclose material relationships, correct errors transparently, and revisit guides when products meaningfully change.

What our labels will mean
Hands-on tested: We personally used the product and describe what we tested. Research-based: We evaluated independently attributable evidence without claiming to have tested it. Needs verification: We haven't obtained enough evidence to recommend the product.
We never promise a product is the “best” for everyone. Rankings are conditional on the specific use case, supporting evidence, and prices at the time of review.
Browse our buying guides Compare ownership costsTHE FOXY PICK AWARD
Our #1 recommendation — earned, never bought.
The Foxy Pick is the single product our editors judge to be the strongest fit for most shoppers in a particular buying guide. We consider capability, reliability evidence, total ownership cost, support, and meaningful drawbacks. It is not automatically the cheapest or the most expensive. We will identify the sources and limitations behind every award, and affiliate commissions do not determine who wins.
EXPERT REVIEW SOURCING
How we use independent expert reviews
When relevant to the exact product model, our preferred starting points are CNET, Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, PCMag and Wirecutter. We also consider RTINGS and category specialists with documented firsthand experience. A publication’s reputation does not mean it has evaluated every product.
We link directly to original reviews, give the review date, distinguish hands-on evaluations from general product coverage, and quote a numerical score only when the publication actually published one and its reuse conditions permit. Editorial recommendations without a numerical rating are labeled as verdicts, not assigned an invented score.
We show owner ratings separately, with the source, review count, product variant and date checked. Company-level ratings are not treated as product ratings. Outside scores do not determine The Foxy Pick award, and affiliate relationships never influence rankings.
We do not claim any of these publications endorses FoxyPick or participates in our editorial process.
How our 100-point scores will work
For permanent outdoor lighting, our initial weighting is performance and useful features (30 points), reliability and durability evidence (25), total ownership value (25), installation and usability (10), and warranty and support (10). We will adjust the rubric for other product categories and disclose the weighting in every review.
Evidence gates: A product does not receive a final numerical FoxyPick Score until its exact model and variant are confirmed, key features and compatibility are sourced, total-cost assumptions are stated, major drawbacks are documented, and reliability/support evidence is assessed. We identify whether a finding came from our own testing, independent expert testing, owner reports, or manufacturer documentation.
Uncertainty is not a zero: Missing information is marked unverified rather than scored as poor performance. A partial evidence record is not eligible for the Foxy Pick award. We do not average unlike customer, company, and expert ratings into a single number.
Editorial independence: Affiliate commissions and advertising are not scoring factors. Published recommendations will include review dates and correction notes when meaningful facts change.
OUR EVIDENCE-BASED EDITORIAL APPROACH
Five products. Independent evidence. One smarter pick.
Our method: We synthesize attributed third-party hands-on reviews, applicable published measurements, verified manufacturer documentation and ownership-cost calculations. We do not independently test every product. A manufacturer claim is never presented as a scientific measurement, and different experts’ non-comparable tests are not averaged.
| Criterion | Illustrative weight | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Independent performance evidence | 30% | Only independently verified, sufficiently comparable tests |
| Features and capabilities | 25% | Exact-model specifications and documented capabilities |
| Reliability and support | 20% | Reliable long-term evidence and documented support policies |
| Five-year ownership cost | 15% | Explicit, dated assumptions; separate installation and recurring fees |
| Installation and usability | 10% | Documented setup effort, compatibility and user constraints |
Ranking safeguards: A winner requires a documented comparison of advantages, tradeoffs, evidence confidence and any disagreements between experts. If comparable evidence is missing, we explain a research-based buyer-fit pick rather than imply a laboratory-proven overall winner. We attribute observations, identify affiliate relationships and never invent scores, results, photographs or reviewers.
